Gamification Tools Review: Motivation RPG & The Email Game

emailgame&RPG

Motivation RPG

This is a motivation tool, as the name obviously indicates. It uses RPG elements to motivate you to do things that you might not want to do, such as have good posture or doing push ups. You gain xp for doing these activities, that is given to you at a 15 minute interval or whatever you choose. Every activity you complete is followed by a little text battle between you and your enemy. You might also gain some gold on top of the xp which can use to buy weapons, armour or spells.

All of this might sound cool, but this tool is more or less useless. It might be fun the first few hours, but after some time, dancing stupidly or making weird faces tend to get old. And the whole concept of buying armour and weapon is pointless, since you either win if you do the activity or lose if you do not, the equipment does not seem to have any effect at all.

The graphics are not something to write home about either. The whole game feels incomplete and not really thought through. The thing that annoyed me the most was the gif animation playing while waiting for the next activity.

I only tried this tool for a few hours over a few days, so there might be more to this site, but really did not feel like spending more time on it. It might be a motivation tool for you, try it out yourself

The Email Game

This is a small game can motivate you to read all those annoying emails. The game works by setting a timer on all your emails based on their length, so you might only have 30 seconds or 3 minutes to read and reply on a mail. In the end you are read on how well you did. If you have a lot of time left over after all your mails or you went over time many times.

The game has its drawbacks, mainly that it only works on Gmail. Many people have Gmail, but still the majority are still using Hotmail. The game is great for deleting all those annoying spam mails. I think that it was ment so the timer also was running while replying, but this was not working for me, so I had all the time in the world.

The game is a fun idea, but since check my email several times a day and my mail account is on Hotmail, so had to use my other account, that I never really use, so this is not really a tool for me. But if you are bad at reading your mails, then try out The Email Game

DING! First level up!

levelup1fighter

Fighter level 2

Today I got my first level up, and it felt great! Mainly it got it from achieving over 400 points on Fitocracy in one day. Might not seem like much for people who train everyday and er in great form, but for a flappy nerd like me this was a great and I felt great afterwards.

I am really liking this level up- and quest system, so far. It really motivates me at get me going towards my goals. Especially things that I have been putting off in a long time.

Mostly right now I am achieving my fitness goals, but this is mainly because I need more starter level quests for both wizard and ranger, but mainly for the ranger. So if any of you have suggestions please leave a comment

The Angry Birds Workout Plan – Day 6

angry-bird-main-day6

It was nice to train again after a day’s rest. I really got spaghetti arms after training today. I really like this routine, but it is really hard on my arms, especially after adding weights to my overhead squats. Have added Body Weight Lunges to the routine and also some Standing Calf Raises.

During my training today I broke the 300 point barrier on Fitocracy, so completed my first quest today.

Levels completed today:

(Overhead) Squats

Level 7 *** Level Complete

(Incline) Push Ups

Level 5 ** Level Failed

Back Exercises (One-Arm Dumbbell Row)

Level 6 (30×7.5kg) *** Level Complete

Planks

Level 2 ** Level Failed

Blog Updates – Character Sheet and Quest Log added.

blog-update1

I use the whole day updating the blog, or not all day, had to do my workout. I added some extra gamification to the site, inspired by what Steve Kamb is doing on Nerdfitness. I just added my own spin on the whole thing.

Character Sheet

This is a “about me” page, but also this page builds upon what I talked about in my previous blog “What’s life like for me at Level 50?“.

The character creation is both a symbol of the start of my adventure, but also a way for me to keep track on how far I am in my progress of improving my life. Mainly I will keep track of my weight loss on the character sheet and also my levels of my different classes. Planning to add a short background story later. I chose to add a Fighter class that could cover my physical training and I let the Ranger class be for my life experiences and my improvement on my cooking skills.

Quest Log

This page is where I took the most of the inspiration from Nerdfitness. I modified it to fit me more, since I am using my three class’s, but also using my own experience system. Check out the Quest Log to find out more

I have only added a few quests to start with, but will add a lot more later. I am always looking for good suggestions.

Gamification Tools Review: Codecademy

Codecademy

So far I mostly been posting about fitness website, fitness gamification tools and my training using these, but there are many great gamification tools out there focused on other things. One of these are Codecademy.com

Codecademy

If you are learning to programme websites or just want improve your skills, you can use Codecademy. The site is a learning tool, where you can learn languages such as JavaScript, PHP or basic HTML and CSS. You are rewarded badges and points for completing each class.

I have known about this site for over a year now, and when I started there where only JavaScript and Python courses. Now there are a lot more courses in there, you can even add your own if you are experienced enough, but have not tried this myself yet, so I am not sure how the specifics work, but might review this later when I am skilled enough to create a course.

The point and badge system is great, but getting a badge for completing every single assignment seems to be a little too much, they tend to lose their effect when you get to many to fast. There are still other badges that require a bit more of work to get, like doing assignments for several days in a row or gaining a specific amount of points in one day.

One of the problems I have with the site, is the some of the assignments are broken. Some of them require very specific code to be completed, even if you have code that would complete the required assignments specifications, you might still get that annoying Oops, try again. message. Luckily there is a great Q&A Forum for each course, where you can get help if you get stuck.

Codecademy also contains a lot of groups, both for beginner and for advanced programmers. Each group have its own forum system, where you can ask questions or discuss subjects with other developers.

Create your own user to learn to code your own website or improve your programming skills
